The questions and answers of
SARS
What is SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)?
SARS is a
respiratory illness caused by SARS virus (suspected to be coronavirus). It is
spread by close distance droplet transmission and through close contact.
Pneumonia is the main clinical symptom. The outbreak of SARS appears obviously
congregate.
What are the main clinical symptoms of SARS? What differences are
there between SARS and common cold?
The main clinical symptoms of
SARS include fever, headache, body aches, tiredness, dry cough and less sputum.
Some patients get difficulty in breathing symptoms such as shortness of
breathing and minority of them may develop an acute respiratory distress
syndrome. In the early stage of the disease, the white blood cell count is
normal or decreased and the X-ray of chest finds pneumonia-like changes. The
symptoms of common cold include fever, cough and headache that would be
recovered in few days and there are no pneumonia signs.
How long is the incubation period for SARS?
The incubation
period for SARS is about 2-13 days, commonly 4-5 days.
How is SARS spread?
In some cases, SARS is seriously
infectious. It is spread mainly by close distance droplet transmission, through
contact with patient’s respiration secretions and close contact. People can be
infected generally, and the health care workers are most at risk of infecting
SARS.
Is SARS seriously infectious? Is the quarantine needed when contacting
with patients?
SARS is seriously infectious. It is spread by close
distance droplet transmission and through contact with patient’s respiratory
secretions. So strict quarantine measures must be taken strictly when contacting
with patients or when health care workers are treating SARS patients.
When SARS cases turn up, how can people sterilize the patient’s
home?
At SARS patients’ residence, first, open the windows and
ventilate the air of whole room. Second, keep the room air clean. If the
patient’s room is not able to ventilate, heated lactic acid can be used to
fumigate the air and the sterilized dose is 2 ML/30M3 usually. For the ground of
room, we should use 0.1% per-oxyacetic acid to mop or 0.2%-0.5% per-oxyacetic
acid to sprinkle or 1000 mg/l disinfectant containing chlorine to sprinkle
(mop). For the surface of subject (e.g. table and chair etc.), disinfectant
above can be used to wipe.
If there are some SARS symptoms such as fever, cough, how can people
handle the situation?
If there is fever, cough and other respiratory
symptoms, go to hospital as early as possible, and then decide whether to be
hospitalized by doctor.
If a patient is suspected getting SARS, must he (she) have an X-ray
examination to confirm the infection?
If you are suspected getting
SARS, go to hospital as early as possible. X-ray examination is helpful to the
diagnosis.
Are there any therapies for SARS?
At present, there are not any
specific drugs to cure SARS. Through the combined therapy in hospital, including
timely supportive therapy, directed certain therapy to relieve the syndrome and
choosing certain antibiotic, most patients can be cured and recovered. For those
serious cases, respiratory equipment should be used in time.
Is there any vaccine to prevent SARS?
At present there is no
vaccine.
How can people prevent SARS for citizens?
Citizens should do as
follows to prevent SARS:
To have healthy life habits:
*Keep good life
habits. Wash hands after sneeze, cough and nose cleaning
*Use clean towel and
paper to dry hands
* Don’t share towel with others
*Keep balance diets.
Wear proper clothes according to weather changes. Do periodic
exercises and have enough rest
*In order to enhance the immunity, do relieve
pressure and avoid smoking
To Keep the room ventilated:
*Open the window
frequently to be ventilated
*Keep the air conditioner working well, wash the
filter frequently
* Avoid going to those crowed public places where the
ventilation is not very well
If there is a relative or friend who is ill with SARS, what method could
be taken to prevent infection?
The patient should wear antiseptic
mask to prevent infection. One should wear the mask too when he or she will
visit the patient. One should take care of himself and go to see a doctor as
soon as the same symptom happens to him.
What is SARS epidemic region?
SARS epidemic region means the
region where original cases happened, and transmission of SARS occurred, not
including those established imported cases and transmission of that imported
cases.
What is the definition of “Close Contact” of SARS?
“Close
Contact” means nursing or visiting a SARS patient, co-living with a SARS patient
(including hospitalization), or directly touching a SARS patient’s respiratory
tract secretion and body fluid.
Which disease should be ruled out in the process of diagnosis of
SARS?
While diagnosing and treating SARS cases, doctors should rule
out the possibility of other lung disease with similar clinical manifestations,
such as primary bacterial or fungal pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), lung
tumor, non-infective interstitial lung diseases (ILD), pneumonedema,
atelectasis, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary infiltration with eosinophilia, and
pulmonary angeitis.
What is the standard of recovery of SARS?
The following
three requirements should be met simultaneously before people are discharged
from hospital:
(1) The body temperature remains normal for at least
seven days without using any antipyretic
(2) Function of breathing
system improves obviously
(3) Chest image shows conspicuous
improvement
What should be paid attention to in the epidemiological investigation of
SARS?
(1) The patient has had a close contact with Severe
Acute Reparatory Syndrome (SARS) patients or similar cases in recent two weeks,
or there is definite evidence of SARS cases that have infected this patient.
(2) The patient is living in or has visited a SARS epidemic area
in the past two weeks.
How can the laboratory testing identify a SARS case?
In the
early stage of the disease, laboratory testing show white blood cell count is
normal or decreasing. It is an aid in diagnoses of SARS. Depression of the
oxygen pressure in blood vigor analysis should help find SARS cases or define
serious case. A case with other positive result in laboratory testing can be
excluded.
What is the standard of clinical diagnosis of
SARS?
Clinical diagnosis of SARS should include the
following:
(1) Epidemiological data of the case
(2) Suspected symptoms of
SARS
(3) Laboratory testing
(4) Radiographic
evidence
(5) Numerous antibiotic therapies have no clear effect
How can people deal with the suspected cases? To go to hospital or
not?
If you doubt that you have got SARS, you must
go to hospital at once. If doctor tell you that you should be in hospital, or he
makes sure you are a SARS case definition, you’d better follow the doctor’s
advice. Don’t miss the good chance for treatment.
Can we visit patients with SARS in hospital? And what should we pay
attention to?
If there are patients with SARS in hospital, you’d
better not visit them in order to avoid infecting yourselves. If you have to do
so, you should wear respirators and separate clothing. And more attention should
be paid not to directly contact patients, patients’ excretion, secretion and
other contacted things. Visitors should wash hands and possible contaminated
parts immediately before leaving hospital and after arriving at home. At the
same time you should rinse the mouth with salt solution.
How can people disinfect the air of SARS wards?
We should
emphasize on good ventilation of the wards and exhaust systems should be fixed
if there is no independent air supply. Serious case wards can be disinfected by
heating lactic acid with 2 ml/30m3 twice everyday. If there are no patients, 0.5
per-oxyacetic acid can be used by spraying (20-30 ml/m3 for 30 minutes). And 15
per-oxyacetic acid can also be used by heating (7 ml/m3 for 2 hours). Then
windows can be opened.
