Chief procurator:1,394 functionary crime cases solved last year

A total of 1,394 functionary crime cases involving in 1,476 officials were solved in Zhejiang Province last year, which helped to reduce a direct economic loss of about 250 million yuan(US$30.2 million) for the state, Zhu Xiaoqing, chief procurator of Zhejiang Provincial People's Procuratorate said while delivering a report on the anti-corruption work of Zhejiang in 2003 on Thursday.

Zhu admitted that of the 1,394 functionary crime cases, most are crimes relating to embezzlement and bribery, with most of the cases occurring among government organs, judicial and administrative law enforcement bodies.

Of the officials that have been put to court resulted from their functionary crime, one official was at the vice ministerial levle, three at department level and 84 at county evel, according to Zhu.

Zhu said that the anti-corruption can't be relaxed since the condition and soil that breeds corruption still exists in ZHejiang and the number of functionary crime tends to be on the rise in the province.
